INFLUENCES
Not that anyone can match them, but it may be useful to highlight Deep Happy’s most prominent influences: the man who began it all—Stephen Foster; the legendary Broadway songsmiths who invented the American songbook—from Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and George Gershwin in the 20s to Richard Rodgers, Harold Arlen, and Jerome Kern in the 50s; the multitude of jazz pioneers from Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck and Miles Davis of yesteryear to Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau of today; the Bossa Nova movement led by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto; the Pop movement of the 60s—Dylan and the Beatles as well as Burt Bacharach and Jimmy Webb; Marvin Gay, Aretha Franklin and the other great Motown innovators culminating in Stevie Wonder; the Brazilian Tropicalismo movement of the 70s—Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Elis Regina, Ivan Lins and Toninho Horta; the Brit-Pop resurgence of the 80s; plus all the wonderfully eccentric fusionists who seemed to come out of nowhere to say so much: Gram Parsons, Airto, Fela, Gato Barbieri, Jaco Pastorius, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Milton Nascimento, and Youssou N’Dour. And don’t forget the comedians who mined the intrinsic connection between music and comedy, from Victor Borge, Jimmy Durante and Jack Benny to Spike Jones, Roger Miller and Steve Martin. Whew!
